    Blogging for Backlash
I've said all along that I think this is first and foremost a civil liberties issue, a freedom of expression issue and a censorship issue. It's about a government telling us that we shouldn't be looking at particular pictures, not because doing so will cause us all to go out and commit crimes but because some pictures are not to their taste. They've used emotive words like 'violent', 'extreme' and 'abhorrent'. People looking at these pictures must be sick, they imply. No decent minded person would want to look at such images. They’ve lied about the nature of the sites that they’ve given as examples of violent porn. They’ve described sites where women are being raped and murdered but failed to come up with a single example of this.

I believe their primary motivation is not to prevent crime. They’ve admitted themselves that they have no proof that viewing images causes crime. I believe this is about an attempt to gain some control of the internet and to police desire. They think that we shouldn’t be thinking about and fantasising about certain things. I don’t believe banning these images will prevent that happening either. Sexual desire can’t be tamed in that way. Some people are turned on by violent imagery that is not intended to be sexually arousing. Many images that I personally find sexually exciting are not considered to be porn at all. People can be turned on by a whole range of imagery that this government and the supporters of the proposed new law may think is abnormal but would not be covered by these proposals. Perhaps they will think up some other excuse to introduce more repressive sex laws in the future?

I think the violent porn law would only cause harm. It would make criminals out of people who pose no threat to society at all. Names would be added to the sex offenders register that shouldn’t be there. Lives will be ruined. People would be judged on what they were thinking about, rather than what they were doing. Thought crime would become a reality. Welcome to 1984.

Blogging for Backlash on the 9th October
Just a reminder to anyone interested that on the 9th October parliament returns from the summer recess. Backlash is asking that anyone who opposes the violent porn proposals writes a blog about this on that date and has it listed on a master list - http://bloggingforbacklash.blogspot.com/

Blogs can and do influence opinions. The Blogging for Backlash day would enable us all to be heard in one concentrated effort. And we could repeat this after the Queen's Speech in November.

If you would like to take part, please go to the Blogging for Backlash blog and add a comment.

    And it's this Monday now.

If you are concerned about the Government's proposals on violent porn and haven't yet joined [info]backlashuk_org, please do. An announcement is expected today, outlining the new laws the Government intends to introduce. Any help in opposing these new laws would be very welcome.

Also, If you look at the www.backlash-uk.org.uk website there are lots of arguments against the proposals that wouldn't out you.

You can argue against these plans from a liberal, anti-censorship, anti-statist position.

If you feel able to do so, it would be great if you could find political blogs, yahoo groups etc and help to raise awareness of these proposals....
Sites targeted at artists, musicians, film viewers, goths, vampiricism, many more, also need to be targeted.

If anyone is good with graphics, we're working on new flyers.

We also need to decide what, if anything, we can do, by attending the upcoming political conferences; both party and TU.

There are probably loads of ways to oppose the plans that Backlash has never thought of.
If you have ideas, let us know.
